Additional Information

One of the most notorious figures in early 18th century Scotland, Lord Lovat was a clan chief who had to fight for his land and title, an alleged rapist, a prisoner of Louis XIV in France, a Jacobite sympathiser and a Hanoverian double agent. His support for Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 Rising would lead him to the block as the last man ever to be beheaded for treason in British history, whilst the crowds sang at him “Don’t you love it, Lord Lovat”.  Murdo Fraser will give this illustrated talk which will cover the life and times of one of the most colourful, controversial and significant figures of the Jacobite period.

Murdo Fraser has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament for Mid-Scotland and Fife since 2001, and currently serves as a Scottish Conservative spokesman on Public Service Reform. A keen student of Scottish history, his double biography of the Marquis of Argyll and the 1st Marquis of Montrose, The Rivals, was published in 2015. He is now co-host of the Scottish history podcast A Thistle with Thorns
