Additional Information

David Harrison will lecture about the time in the first world war, between 1915 and 1918, when the Italians fought the Austro-Hungarians along a front that stretched from the Swiss Border to the Adriatic Sea. In October 1917 the armies of the Central Powers mounted a surprise attack at Caporetto which caused the headlong retreat of the Italian 2nd Army from the Isonzo to the Piave River. British and the French divisions were sent from the Western Front to reinforce the Italian armies and helped in stabilising the situation. They then assisted in checking the further Austro-Hungarian offensive in June 1918, before taking part in the final battle of the campaign, known as Vittorio Veneto in October 1918, which caused the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Lieutenant Colonel Dick O’Connor, whilst commanding 2 HAC, played a key part in this battle through the capture Papadopoli Island.

David Harrison served more than 30 years in the British Army before becoming a battlefield tour guide to the First and Second World War campaigns in Italy. He will be acting as the historian for the Black Watch Association’s tour to Cassino and Monte Scalari in May 2027.
