Geordie Fergusson and Major Hugh Rose will give a joint presentation about The Black Watch’s contribution to the 2nd Chindit Expedition behind Japanese lines in Burma (March-June 1944) – 80 years ago this year.
Their talk will cover the actions undertaken by 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch which was flown into jungle airstrips before being split into two columns – 73 Column commanded by Col George Green (CO 2BW) and 42 Column by Major David Rose (Hugh’s father). It will also look at the actions of 16 Brigade, which marched into Burma. The Brigade did not have Black Watch units but was commanded by Brigadier Bernard Fergusson (Geordie’s father).
Their lecture will include a summary of the strategic and tactical debate about Long Range Penetration behind enemy lines but will concentrate on the detailed experiences and hardships that our soldiers suffered while fighting in the jungle. Finally, Geordie will tell the story of his own efforts in 2011 to follow in his father’s footsteps.
