Resources & Activities

To help you make the most of your visit to The Black Watch Castle and Museum, we’ve created a range of curriculum-linked resources to support learning before and after your trip.

Our learning resources introduce key themes, vocabulary and background knowledge, while also offering opportunities for reflection, discussion and creative follow-up linked to your visit.

All resources are free to download and designed to be flexible, easy to print and simple to adapt to your classroom.

Pre and Post Visit Resources

These materials are designed to support your pupils’ learning before and after their visit to The Black Watch Castle and Museum. Whether used as part of a lesson, a short task or a creative project, each resource helps pupils explore the history of The Black Watch, make links to key themes and deepen their understanding of Scotland’s military past.

Interview a Family Member

Encourage pupils to explore their own family history by interviewing someone at home. This activity helps develop listening and communication skills while prompting reflection on how personal stories connect to wider historical events and themes.

Build a Museum

This activity guides pupils through creating a class exhibit that tells the story of the people in their room. They’ll build a timeline of key events, gather objects or images that represent those moments, and think about how to display them in a way that shares their collective story.

World War One

Pupils explore the role of The Black Watch during the First World War through drama, diary writing and object discussion, helping them understand military life, wartime reactions and Scotland’s place in the conflict.

World War Two

Using drama, discussion and creative writing, pupils explore themes of evacuation, rationing and home front life, while learning about The Black Watch’s role during the Second World War.
