Lt Col Andy Middlemiss will talk about The Malayan campaign which was one of the few successful counter-insurgency operations undertaken by the Western powers. Still studied today, it provides many important lessons on how such campaigns should be conducted, most of which were then ignored by the US in the conflict in Vietnam, shortly afterwards.
Malaya managed to repel an organised communist insurrection, mainly due to the authorities getting organised, applying simple military principles, and the determination and courage of thousands of UK and Commonwealth servicemen and women.

Lt Col Middlemiss was in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers for 33 years, serving all over the world, including three Far East tours, one of which was a year working with the Malaysian armed Forces. During that year, living in Kuala Lumpa, Andy travelled all over the peninsula and visited sites of WW2 and the Emergency battles. His Malay language is now rusty but used to be quite respectable. Andy has worked as a volunteer for SSAFA, The Armed Forces Charity for over 20 years – a charity helping serving and ex-serving members of the armed forces and their families in a wide variety of ways. He is the Perth & Kinross Branch Chairman. He was awarded a BEM in the 2022 New Year’s honours for this work. He has led several tours to the WW1 battlefields and is planning a D-Day 80 one in 2024.
