Event Details

The Battle to cross the Rhine was crucial for the Allied advance into Germany and had been planned for many months.

Operation Plunder was the name of the 21st Army Group operation to cross the Rhine on the night of 23 March 1945.  Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery planned a three-army assault, including an airborne assault, a five-thousand-gun artillery barrage, and supported by Anglo-American bombers.  The 51st Highland Division would lead the crossing.

Brigadier Charles Grant will cover the months before the crossing, preliminary operations, Alliance frictions and the 21st Army Group crossing focusing on the 51st Highland Division.

Brigadier Charles Grant was commissioned into the Queen’s Own Highlanders in 1968.  He commanded the 51st Highland Brigade in Perth, and after his retirement from the army, he was appointed Chief Executive of the Highland Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association. He has published several books on military history and wargaming.
