Panda Cubs

Amazingly, this year it was announced by China that pandas are no longer an endangered species. Although they are still considered to be vulnerable, long term conservation efforts have increased the number of pandas in the wild to 1800.

The arrival of Yang Guang and Tian Tian, a pair of male and female pandas, at Edinburgh in 2011 brought great excitement to Scotland. Tian Tian, whose name means Sweetie, had a baby panda in 2007 and it was hoped that they would have another cub together. Sadly, this hasn’t happened but visitors still flock to see these incredibly cute bears.

The name of the male panda, Yang Guang, means Sunshine in Mandarin. The diet of a panda is almost entirely made of bamboo. In fact, Yang Guang can eat 100kg of it every day!
