Join us for an exciting summer of creativity and history at The Black Watch Castle and Museum! Our Summer Crafts Series, happening every Tuesday, is designed for children and their accompanying adults to dive into the rich history of The Black Watch through engaging and hands-on activities. Each session aligns with a weekly Highlight Tour that explores different eras and events in The Black Watch’s storied past. The 30 minute Highlight tour will be running at 12:15pm

Upcoming Craft Sessions and Highlight Tours:

16th July – Create and Conquer Learn about life in the 42nd Regiment of Foot as you make your own sword from cardboard and tin foil and design your own regimental flag with construction paper and designs.
Highlight Tour: Origins and The French Wars
Visit the initial galleries of The Black Watch Castle and Museum to discover the beginnings of The Black Watch and their participation in Britain’s wars against the French.

23rd July – Sharks and Ships In 1852, the HMS Birkenhead sank with 643 people onboard, including members of The Black Watch. Learn more about this event as we use paper plates and paint to make sharks and ships!
Highlight Tour: The Empire
Explore the story of the Birkenhead Jugs, follow the evolution of the uniform, and try your hand at lifting a Flintlock Smoothbore Musket, used by the British Army throughout the 19th century.

30th July – Panoramic Periscopes Meet a First World War Black Watch Soldier and ask about his experience in the trenches as you use card and mirrors to build the tool used to safely see over the top of the trenches.
Highlight Tour: First World War
Discover The Black Watch Castle and Museum’s First World War gallery, uncovering stories about muddy kilts, small pianos, gas masks, and memorials.

6th August – Museum Masterpiece Look over images of paintings from The Black Watch Castle and Museum collection and use tissue paper and glue to recreate the landscapes in the image.
Highlight Tour: Second World War
Begin with Neville Chamberlain’s declaration of war and journey through The Black Watch’s experience on frontlines around the world, ending with the stories of members captured at St. Valery and held as prisoners until the war’s end.
