Four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine stands at a strategic crossroads. The country’s extraordinary resilience — forged through technological innovation, civic mobilisation, and Western support — has blunted Moscow’s early ambitions, but the path to a sustainable and acceptable peace remains elusive.
The conflict has evolved from rapid manoeuvre to a grinding war of attrition, testing not only Ukraine’s endurance but the cohesion and long-term will of its allies. As the frontline stabilises and both sides adapt their political and military strategies, key questions emerge:
Drawing on his experience as Senior Adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Defence (2016–2019), General Sir Nick Parker will explore how Ukraine’s armed forces transformed after 2014 and the prospects for ending a war that has reshaped Europe’s security landscape and tested the moral cohesion of the democratic world.
This lecture will address not only the military and geopolitical dimensions, but also the strategic, moral, and societal choices that will determine the fate of Ukraine — and, by extension, the credibility of Western resolve in a world entering a new age of insecurity.
General Sir Nick Parker left the UK Army in May 2013 after 40 years’ service. His senior operational military experience includes Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. He led the military reaction to the venue security crisis at the London 2012 Olympics. His final appointment was Commander in Chief UK Land Forces. Since leaving he has reviewed the senior structure of the UK Police, participated in the Citizens Commission on Islam, Participation & Public Life and has mentored senior business executives. He advised the Ukraine Minister of Defence from 2016 to 2019. He was the Chair of the Prince of Wales’ #iwill Campaign and was a Director of the Invictus Games 2014. He is a Geopolitical Advisor to Academy Securities and a Director of Tenacious Holdings Ltd. He was the Chair of REACT Disaster Response for 10 years and now Chairs the Armed Services Trauma Rehabilitation Outcome (Advance) Study Charity.
