What’s On:

  • Reenactors: Meet reenactors from key periods in history including a Redcoats soldier, the Ghost of Ticonderoga, a soldier from WW1 and a Second World War dispatch rider who will bring history to life.
  • Military Vehicles: Explore vehicles including a World War Two Jeep and a dispatch rider motorcycle, offering a chance to see how soldiers travelled during wartime.
  • Children’s Activities: Children can take part in a trail through the galleries discovering 300 years of The Black Watch’s history. They can get creative with craft activities where kids can create toilet roll soldiers and work together to create a large soldier collage. There will also be opportunities for kids to dress-up in different uniforms from WW1 and WW2.
  • Redcoat Experience: Take part in an interactive Napoleonic drill session with a Redcoat soldier. Learn basic drill movements using wooden muskets, try cartridge making, and receive a certificate of completion. One session is included with your ticket, with additional sessions available for £2 per person on the day.
  • Research Table: Visit the Black Watch Research Table to explore your own family connections to Black Watch soldiers.
  • Object Handling: Examine selected artefacts from the museum’s archive up close, which will include items not normally out on public display.
  • Information Stands: Learn more about history at information stands from the Commonwealth War Graves and Black Watch Cadets.
  • Act of Remembrance: The day concludes with a short Act of Remembrance at 2:45pm at the memorials, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who served.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Tours: Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum with pre-bookable 15-minute sessions running twice an hour from 11:15 until 2:15. These tours offer a glimpse into the museum’s archive, where you’ll discover how objects are stored, cared for and preserved, and learn more about the stories behind the collection.
