Event Details

Colonel A K Miller’s illustrated talk explores the historical background to the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 which has led to the lasting legacy of conflict that continues to exist in what the Jews term ‘Eretz Israel’ – the historical homeland of the Jews. It take you through the growing influence of the Zionist movement from the 1890s, the impact of General Allenby’s campaign in Palestine during the 1st World War, and the challenges faced by the British Mandatory Government until the creation of the State of Israel in May 1948. It will attempt to provide a balanced and unbiased perspective of the complexities of the situation that aims to leave listeners with a better understanding as to why resolution of this enduring conflict is so difficult to achieve.

Colonel A K Miller was the Defence and Military Attaché in Israel from 2003-2007. Arriving in the middle of the 2nd Intifada (Palestinian uprising), he was closely engaged in work in the Occupied Palestinian Territories of the West Bank and Gaza to help further the Middle East Peace Process, work that continues today. A regular visitor to the Holy Land since returning to Scotland, he led a centenary battlefield tour of the Palestine Campaign in 2017 ‘In the Footsteps of Allenby’. He maintains a close interest in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has spoken extensively to variety of audiences in Scotland.
