This lecture revolves around The Hauntings as a piece of art, and what it means to be a soldier. The title is taken from Leonard Cohen’s song ‘Anthem’ and the line refers to the brokenness and imperfection of everything. Looking at The Hauntings sculpture McKee was struck by the holes and light contrasting with the heavy almost industrial armour of the material making up the body. He thought about the various phases of a soldier – the building up of a mental armour to fight and the resulting PTSD that has been recognised since the first world war. All of these dimensions of a soldier have to be acknowledged and it feels like the sculpture does just that – creating space for thought and debate on the role of a soldier.
Dr Francis McKee, PhD is a writer, curator, and photographer, who is Research Fellow at Glasgow School of Art and has been the Director for the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow since 2006.
