David Harrison will give a lecture on The Battle for Rome 1944 which will cover the four battles of Monte Cassino. The first battle was launched in January and included the landing at Anzio. In the fourth battle, Operation DIADEM saw the 8th Army break the deadlock with the crossing of the Garigliano River prior to the advance up the Liri Valley. Concurrently, the US 5th Army broke out from Anzio and captured Rome on 4 June. The 6th Battalion The Black Watch was serving in the British 4th Division and took part in the fourth battle.
