Boys in The Black Watch
This new temporary exhibition explores the experiences of the youngest members of The Black Watch.
From the 18th and 19th centuries to the First World War and beyond, boys as young as 15 served as drummer boys, buglers, stretcher bearers, and even frontline soldiers. Some joined in search of adventure, while others saw military life as a means of escape from poverty or hardship.
Drawing on archival records, personal stories, and historical objects, Highland Laddies sheds light on the reality of underage enlistment and the role of youth in military history. It also invites reflection on the ongoing debate around young people joining the armed forces today.
