After two unsuccessful attempts by General Murray to take Gaza, Allenby took over. He conducted a most successful campaign leading not only to the capture of Gaza but to the taking of Jerusalem and most of present day Syria. In stark contrast to the Western Front, this was a campaign of effective use of force, surprise and mobility.
