Lecture | 1917 - Total War
Friends of The Black Watch Castle and Museum lecture series
Please note the date for this lecture has now changed from Thursday 7th December to Thursday 14th December
After the trials of the Somme and Verdun would the Allies apply the lessons learned and their growing stocks of materiel to break the Central Powers? They would try but one ally would be knocked out of the war and two came close to defeat. Would the USA's declaration of war on Imperial Germany assure victory? Meanwhile the BEF would take on the lion's share of the fighting but more battles would mean yet more casualties. This talk will give an overview of the highs and lows of a turbulent year both at home and abroad.
Lecturer Mike Taylor is a member of the Tayside Branch of the Western Front Association. The Western Front Association was formed in 1980 to maintain interest in the First World War (1914-1918).
